What is the weather like in Hungary in winter?

Nowadays the weather is usually mild in October and in November. It is getting colder and colder in December. Sometimes it can be bitterly cold and chilly when nobody wants to go out to freeze to death. In winter the temperature falls to freezing point or below 0 degree Celsius. When it snows I am very happy because I like skiing and sledging, and I enjoy the first few flakes of snow.

What do you need if you want to make pancakes?

First you need some flour and milk, eggs, sugar. They should be mixed in a bowl. You can add some soda water to these. Then you can fry the batter in a pan. The filling can be jam or cottage cheese depending on your taste.

What kind of free time activities do students have in Hungary?

There are many indoor and outdoor activities in Hungary. Students can take part in water sports (such as swimming) or in athletics (such as running) or in ball games (football, tennis, squash, hockey, basketball, volleyball, handball, and table tennis). In winter students can go skiing, skating, snowboarding and play ice hockey.

Well, I don’t get much physical exercise these days and I am not a sporty person but I played tennis and chess after school which was very tiring so I switched to swimming and karate but these were boring. The most important is that you should do exercises to keep yourself fit and healthy.

What kind of buildings can be found in a city?

We can find factories, churches, a town hall, police stations, hospitals, shopping centres or malls in cities. Big cities have airports and larger cities (for example New York or Shanghai) have skyscrapers. Most people live in detached houses or in blocks of flats. We can see many semi-detached houses which are joined to another house on one side. Mainly in London rows of houses or the so-called terraced houses are very common.

How many meals do you have a day?

I usually have 4 meals a day: breakfast, elevenses, lunch and dinner. In the morning I have a light breakfast. My mom prepares scrambled eggs with toast for breakfast. I have a sandwich for elevenses in the middle of the morning. On most occasions I have a hot meal for lunch. In the evening we have dinner. I think dinner is the most important meal of the day because the whole family can be together.

On Sundays we have a 5-course meal: starter, main course, soup, salad and a dessert. I am not a vegetarian and I am not on a diet but I like natural ingredients and organic food.

What kind of papers can you buy at a newsagent's?

I can buy daily newspapers, quality papers, tabloids, national or local evening papers, (women’s/men’s) magazines, radio & TV guides and children’s comics. We can find magazines dealing with women’s or men’s issues with small ads. National papers cover foreign news and local papers cover home events.

How many inhabitants are there in your town?

….. (?) is a city of about 9000 inhabitants. In 2000 it has a population of about ……..   In  (?)  ……30% (?) of the population is under 16 years of age.

What are the white-collar jobs?

White-collar workers have jobs in offices and banks rather than in factories or in mines. They typically belong to the class of people who are usually well-educated and who work in jobs which they have been trained to do. White-collar workers are: doctors, lawyers, managers and so on and forth. In order to be a white collar worker you have to be well-educated and trained.

What kind of sports and games do you know?

Nowadays we have a vast variety of sports and games. There are indoor and outdoor games, amateur, professional, leisure, team, extreme sports. Games like: tennis, football, and chess. You can do gymnastics and body sports. You can ride a bike or a horse.

Water sports: swimming: breast/back/butterfly stroke, freestyle, scuba diving, sailing, rowing, canoeing, surfing, windsurfing, water-skiing, water polo

Track and field sports: long distance running, marathon running, sprint, walking, high jump, long jump, hammer throw, discus throw and pentathlon

Ball games: football, cricket, baseball, golf, tennis, squash, rugby, hockey, basketball, volleyball, handball, table tennis and pool.

Combat sports: wrestling, boxing, karate, and judo

Winter sports: skiing, ice-skating, figure-skating, speed-skating, bobsleighing, snowboarding, ice hockey

Other sports: weightlifting, fencing, horse riding, mountain climbing, shooting, archery, cycling, parachuting, bungee jumping

Leisure sport: aerobics, body building, jogging, bowling, darts, roller-skating, chess, cards, hiking, walking, camping, caravanning

How do you send e- mails?

First you have to have an e-mail box that allows you to create and send emails. To send letters to your recipients you have to create a new message in your e-mail client. We have to click on ‘compose’ and we can start a new message Type the message and its subject in a box, and finally click on the ‘send’ symbol.

What do you need if you want to make pancakes?

We need some flour, milk, eggs and a little oil. We have to find a mixing bowl, a blender, or a spoon to mix the ingredients together and we also need a frying pan. We do not need any special skills just two hands.

What are your favourite subjects at school?

My favourite subjects are Biology, and Physics. I am very good at Chemistry. I like sciences the most. But I am also interested in humanities like History or Hungarian Language and Literature.

What kind of car does your family have?

Our car is one of the most popular makes of the car market. We have a grey Toyota Yaris. My father drives it, usually. Unfortunately I do not have a driving licence, but I want to get it as soon as possible.

What is your best friend like?

My best friend is very energetic, kind and quite talkative. She is hard-working and for most of the time she is happy. She is one of the best students in class. She is very clever. Unfortunately she is a bit shy, but she has a good sense of humour. She is interested in sports and people. She is my best friend because she is just and fair and she always tells the truth.

Why do people use the Internet?

People use the internet because they would like to keep in touch with their friends or relatives, or they would like to find or give information about all kinds of things. We can read the latest news on the internet and we can subscribe to various types of magazines. We can watch TV as well. If you are bored you can chat with other people, or you can lead a blog. Blog is like an electric diary. More and more companies, banks and schools are on the internet.

You can download music, films which is illegal and you can download viruses as well that can be harmful to your computer.

What kind of electric gadgets are there in your kitchen and bathroom?

Our kitchen is not very big. In the kitchen we have an electric food mixer, a toaster for toasting bread, a coffee maker, a microwave oven and a gas cooker.

My neighbour has a dishwasher because she has got a big family.

In the bathroom we have a modern washing machine, an old hairdryer and an electric razor for my father.   

When did you last eat out?

I ate out about two months ago. I was with my family at a restaurant because we celebrated my parents 10^th wedding anniversary. We usually eat out on special occasions, because eating out can be very expensive. Anyway, eating out is the best, because my mother does not have to prepare the meal, you do not have to wash the dirty dishes and you can choose from different dishes and last but not least restaurants serve good food.  

When do people travel by air?

If we want to reach our destination fast, we have no time, and we have money then we choose planes. Travelling by air is the fastest and the most comfortable way to reach a place which is far away. Businessmen usually choose planes because they can afford it. Nowadays there are many airways that cost less than the average. Ordinary people choose planes if they want to go on holiday abroad.

What does your best friend look like?

She is not very tall. She has straight medium-length dark brown hair and brown eyes. She has a round face with an ordinary nose and small ears. She was a bit overweight but she lost weight and I think she is far too thin for her height now. Her complexion is rather pale.

What do you do when you are ill?

My mother usually sends me to the doctor. My GP examines me. He looks at my tongue and throat, feels my pulse and listens to my lungs. He diagnoses my illness and prescribes some medicine. He says I have to stay in bed for a couple of days. I get all the pills at the chemist’s and I go home and take the medicines three times a day after or before meals. I have to drink a lot of hot tea with lemon and keep warm. My mother gives me a thermometer to take my temperature every evening until I can go to school again.

What types of electric gadgets are there in your kitchen or your bathroom?

There are some typical ones like electric ovens, or a toaster. A blender is important if you want to mix things. We also use a kettle or a percolator. In the bathroom we use hair dryers and washing machines, and we also have electric razors.

For women there are hobbies about fashion like sewing and embroidering. They can also cook, or if they have green fingers they can take care of flowers in their gardens. For men fixing cars or working in the garage can be a hobby. They also love using computers or playing sports. Sometimes they prefer D. I. Y.

Where would you like to travel?

I would like to travel abroad. I have never been to a foreign country.  I would like to go on a holiday by the sea because I like swimming and sunbathing. I want to see all the sights, like statues, museums, galleries, important squares and buildings. My first destination would be London. I have been learning English for years and I could speak to native English speakers. In winter I would like to go on a skiing holiday. In my life I would like to try out a camping holiday and a sea-cruise.
