How do you celebrate Christmas?

At christmas the whole family comes together. My mum prepares lunch, usually fish or roast turkey. We decorate a tree, and we give presents to each other. Sometimes we go to church to see the nativity play. This occasion is special, because we are with our loved ones. We can sing christmas carols, and even at the school we have a christmas party.

1. What kinds of vehicles are used in city transport?

People use the underground, trams, buses, taxis, cars, bicycles, motorbikes, and scooters. I like the underground most. It’s really fast. I buy a ticket every day. I go down on the escalator and wait for the train. When the train comes, I get on it; I get off at the right stop when the sliding door opens.

2. What do you have to do if you want to be fit?

If I want to be fit, I have to do sports or play sports. I like running every day. All I need is my trainers. I can run for 10 minutes.

3. What is your favourite season and why?

My favourite season is summer. Because it is usually hot, I can go to the swimming pool or to the beach. I like sunbathing. I also like spring. Nature wakes up. I love daffodils and lilacs.

4. What can you buy in a supermarket?

I can buy many things, for instance, dairy products like milk, yoghurt and cheese. There is a meat counter too, with chicken, pork, beef, fish, and mutton.

You can also buy: some soap, detergent, washing-up liquid, hair gel, shower gel.

5. How do you celebrate Christmas?

I celebrate Christmas with my family. We gather and it’s a special occasion. I decorate the Christmas tree (pine), my mother cooks, and we eat a lot, for example fish soup or roast turkey.

We give presents to each other. At Christmas we celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ.

6. When were you last ill?

I was last ill 2 months ago. I had a cold. I had a runny nose, I sneezed a lot. (Acho.) I had a fever/temperature. I went to see my GP. He examined me. He made out prescriptions. I went to the chemist’s to buy some painkillers, vitamins and some antifebriles. My friends said: speedy recovery.

7. What do you usually have for breakfast?

I usually have some: bread and butter, cold cuts, cereals, and a bun (filled with: jam)

I drink coffee without sugar.

8. How is your room furnished?

In my room there is a bed, a red carpet, a wardrobe; there are armchairs, a bedside table, a cupboard, and a 3-piece suite.

I like my room because it’s light, airy and cosy/homely.

9. Where do you usually celebrate New Year’s Eve?

I usually go out and have a party all night long. We drink champagne or fizzy drinks.

We eat frankfurters with mustard, or lentils. It brings luck.

We sing the national anthem at midnight.

10. What kind of music do you like?

I’m fond of pop music a lot. I always listen to it in the car, or when I cook. I love the Beatles and Sting too.

11.  Who prepares breakfast and lunch in your family?

In my family my mother/my wife/my husband  cooks. /

I cook.

I don’t prepare breakfast; we just buy something to eat at the baker’s on the way to work. At the weekend I cook, my family loves breaded chicken, pancakes.

12. What kind of housework do you hate doing?

I hate ironing and doing the washing up. These take a lot of time. We always have many dirty plates, glasses, and filthy cutlery after dinners.

13. What labour saving devices do you know?

Nowadays we use many things. In the garden we use a lawnmower or a chainsaw. In the kitchen there is an oven, a microwave, a percolator or a blender.

14. What kinds of shops are there in the town where you live?

In my town there are just few shops, because it’s a small town. There’s a supermarket, a music shop, a butcher’s  a florist, a stationer’s, men’s and lady’s wear, a chemist’s, a hardware’s shop /nail, hammer, electric gadgets/.

15.  Where do people go on holiday in Hungary?

People go on holiday to Lake Balaton, it is the biggest lake in Hungary. You can swim, jetski, windsurf, sunbathe there. Sometimes I go to the mountains or a spa.

16.  How many meals do you have during the day?

I usually have 5 meals a day. Just a light breakfast to start with, elevenses – no, I don’t have the time. At one, a quick lunch, at about four a bit of snack /apple, biscuits/ then a light dinner at home. If I go out, then I have a sandwich with friends at a bar too.

17.   What is the most important family festival for you?

I really like birthdays, when I wish many happy returns of the day. When the candles are blown out on the cake, you can wish something. I also like namedays. We give some flowers or a bottle of wine to the celebrated person.

18.   What kind of summer sports do you know?

There are a lot of summer sports: swimming, jetskiing, playing golf, playing tennis, beach volleyball. I love swimming, I can swim under water. We have a swimming pool in the town.

The entrance fee is terribly high.

19.   What are the things you have to buy every day?

Staple food is important to a family: we need fresh dairy products every day, or fresh fruit, bread, or croissants.

20.    What do you need if you’d like to go on holiday abroad?

You need a certain document like a visa, or a passport, an ID within the EU. You need suitcases or holdalls for your belongings like: underwear, shirts, toothpaste, toothbrush…

You also need a map or a guidebook, ah and your plane ticket  too ;a  camera, or a mosquito repellent can be important as well.

21. What kind of music do you like?

I prefer many types of music, especially pop, and rock. I rarely listen to classical music, but at school I have to. I have a portable CD player, so my music can be with me all the time.

22. How do we celebrate Easter?

In Hungary we eat hard-boiled eggs and ham. People paint eggs, and boys sprinkle girls with some perfume or a bucket of water. In return they get chocolate eggs or bunnies...we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, so a lot of people go to church. We decorate our houses with daffodils and catkins.

23. What kinds of clothes do you put on for everyday wear?

I love casual clothes like T-shirts and jeans. Sometimes a shirt or a jumper can be OK, but I can't stand too elegant items. I love when I feel comfortable. I like trainers, but sometimes I wear leathe r shoes.

24. What kinds of pets and other animals are there around your house?

We have a dog called Jiffy, his nose is always twitching and he loves playing and running about. I take him for a walk every day. Once we had a hamster called Guszti, it ate lots of fresh vegetables and seeds. I like animals, so one day maybe I could have two dogs and cats too.

25. What equipment do you need if you want to play football?

The most important thing is the right boots and a ball made of leather. You also need a strip, that is the T-shirt with shorts, you need sports socks as well. Then you need a football pitch and some friends to play with.
